Machairoceratops is derived from the Greek "machairis" (bent sword), "keras" (horn) and "ops" (face), in reference to a pair of large forward-curving horns on its frill. The species epithet, cronusi, refers to the Greek god Cronus who, according to mythology, de-tackled his father Uranus with a "bent sword" in the form of a curve-bladed sickle.
