The new species of dinosaur, Regaliceratops, is nicknamed "Hellboy."

At first glance, the untrained eye is likely to see the childhood favorite Triceratops — and to be sure, Regaliceratops is a close relative. But there are some important differences, scientists say. The bones of the new species, which lived in the Cretaceous some 70 million years ago, were found about a decade ago near a river in southeastern Alberta, Canada. It acquired the nickname "Hellboy" for the horned comic-book (and film) character.

Unlike Triceratops, "Hellboy" has almost "comically small" eye horns. Along with the new dinosaur's large shield-like frill, the combined result looks like a crown. A remarkable neck shield resembling a royal crown that was probably employed during mating rituals and in species.
